Forensic anthropology is one of the major forensic physiological sciences and applies both anthropology (the study of humanity, mainly regarding the physical development of the human species) (Byers, S.N. 2005) and human osteology (the scientific study of structural features within the human body including the structure of bones and teeth as well as morphology) in a legal setting. (Houck, M.M. 2006)
Forensic anthropology is used to help in the identification of human remains which have decomposed or become damaged and are unrecognizable, factors such as: age, sex, stature and the ancestry of the deceased can be discovered through the use of this scientific field. (Siegal, J.A. & Mirakovits, K. 2010)
Anthropology studies humans both culturally and physically and as with all forensic fields, the knowledge and application of this science is used in conjunction with a court of law in order to defend or prosecute individuals accused of crimes.
Forensic anthropology, a relatively new sub-field of both applied anthropology and physical anthropology, uses both disciplines of anthropology to help in identifying an individuals identity, cause of death, time of death and the manner of their death. It is a combination of the many sub-fields of forensic anthropology.
